Okemo Mountain Challenge in Ludlow, Vermont

Okemo Mountain Challenge in Ludlow, Vermont

1000 runners participate in a 10 mile or 5k race that starts at the base of Okemo Mountain and features two climbs to the mountain’s summit before returning back to the base. Run mostly on grass and trails, the mile include 9,000 feet of elevation change. The 5k is a run to the summit, with transportation to the base provided after the race. A portion of the proceeds benefit local, non-profit organizations. Awards will be presented at a post-race barbecue with live entertainment.

Schedule:
8:30 am: Registration begins.
9 am: 5K and 10 mile race begins.
11 am: Post race cookout and entertainment.
11:30 am: 5K race awards.
12 noon: 10 mile race awards.

Junior Farm Vet for a Day in Woodstock, Vermont

Billings Farm & Museum, gateway to Vermont’s rural heritage, will offer the popular hands-on program: Junior Farm Vet for a Day, three times this summer: Wednesday, June 27, July 18, and August 8, from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Designed for ages 10 – 15, the day-long program will introduce students to the physiology and basic care of large farm animals. Participants should wear barn clothes and be prepared to get dirty while working alongside a large animal veterinarian in the Billings livestock barns. They will study the anatomy and physiology of ruminants (cows and sheep) and non-ruminants (horses), help groom them, and participate in a physical exam of one of the animals. The program fee is $65 for Farm & Museum members and $75 for non-members, which includes a stethoscope and workbook to take home. The program has limited enrollment and advance registration is required.

Visitors can participate in making and tasting hand-cranked ice cream several times during the day, while learning the history and science of the “great American dessert.” Have fun making an ice cream cone headband and playing 19th century historic games. Admission to National Ice Cream Day includes all programs and activities, plus the operating dairy farm, farm life exhibits, and the restored and furnished 1890 Farm House.

Okemo Mountain celebrates Independence Day with an all-American concert featuring popular blues artists. Admission is free and music starts at noon. The lawn in the courtyard at Okemo’s Jackson Gore Inn will be transformed into an outdoor concert venue for the day. Families are welcome, and all attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets. Okemo’s culinary staff will be serving frosty-cold beverages and fresh-from-the-grill burgers, hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches and more. Concert-goers can also opt for full service dining with al fresco seating at Jackson Gore’s Coleman Brook Tavern.
